Commemorating Mental Health in America

The commemorations that exist for mental illness usually are annual anniversaries dedicated to raising awareness. There have also been movements for a few decades now committed to informing the public about mental illness. There has been a  Mental Illness Awareness week since the 1990s.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a good source in learning about mental health awareness. They joined the movement for Mental Health Awareness Month, which takes place during May.  NAMI's slogan, "You Are Not Alone," is an important message to provide support for people with mental illness. They also advocate for policies and fight the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness also dedicates a week in October called Mental Illness Awareness Week to provide support, raise awareness, and fight stigma. Each year participants educate the public on mental illness. The movement only continues to grow stronger.

The World Health Organization states that October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The day is dedicated in raising awareness about mental health. The WHO says that the day is for all of the stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work and what needs to be done to improve mental healthcare.
