Protest and State Violence
Outside of the courts, the tribe and their allies have taken up protesting the desecration of their sacred land and drinking water. They have organized runs, horseback rides, and marches. They are based at Sacred Stone Camp on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
However, as to be expected, they were met with violence. The Water Protectors were met with tear gas (a substance banned in warfare), water cannons, attack dogs, of which one reportedly bit a child.
The violence is brought on by state law enforcement as well as the private security force hired by the Dakota Access Pipeline.
