A series of protests took place across the country in 2020 centered on the Black Lives Matter movement and in response to  the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black Americans who died in police custody. In its year-end look back, National Public Radio's Morning Edition reflected on the year of BLM protests. As shown in news coverage from WANE 15, Fort Wayne was among the cities hosting protests, and among the cities facing challenges to the police response to protestors.

 

 

 

As seen in The Fort Wayne Free Press article "Black Anger," much of the same tension from police responses to Black Americans existed in Fort Wayne in 1970. The article reports personal stories of members of the Black community who faced discrimination from police, which often carried some level of abuse.
